At the northernmost tip of the Tsugaru Peninsula lies Cape Tappi, a headland that juts sharply into the Tsugaru Strait. Flanked by the Sea of Japan to the west, the Tsugaru Strait to the north, and Mutsu Bay to the east, the cape is embraced on three sides by the sea. On this particular day, the winds were uncharacteristically calm, and the entire cape was gently wrapped in golden sunlight.
But in truth, this is a place known as “the Windy Cape,” where powerful sea winds blow fiercely throughout the year. True to its name, it is a place where the harshness and beauty of nature intersect.
The Tatsudomari Line, a scenic coastal route connecting Kodomari and Cape Tappi, winds dramatically along steep cliffs. Along the way, travelers are treated to views of Nanatsu Taki (Seven-Tiered Waterfall), where water cascades in elegant stages down the rock face.
With mountains pressing in from one side and the sea stretching out from the other, the road feels like a corridor that draws you ever closer to the northern edge of the world.
Standing at the cape, you can spot ships moving slowly across the Tsugaru Strait, one by one. As the sun begins to set, the entire strait is gradually dyed in hues of gold.
It is a sight that quietly speaks of long journeys and the deep, enduring memories etched into the sea.
Getting there: About 30 minutes by car from (Michi-no-Eki Kodomari) to Cape Tappi.
Note: The Tatsudomari Line is closed in winter from early November to mid-April.
