Takachiho Gorge captivates visitors with its dramatic landscape of towering cliffs formed by columnar jointed basalt. The pristine Gokase River flows through its heart, showcasing the magnificent Manai Falls. This 17-meter waterfall cascades gracefully, mesmerizing onlookers with its ethereal beauty.
Beyond its natural splendor, Takachiho is a sacred site rich in mythology. Nearby stands Takachiho Shrine, with over 1900 years of history, and Amano Iwato Shrine, tied to the legend of the sun goddess Amaterasu. The area’s significance extends to Japan’s imperial lore. According to legend, Takeiwatatsu-no-Mikoto, grandson of Emperor Jimmu, visited during his governance of Kyushu. From Kunimi-ga-oka Hill, he is said to have surveyed his domain.
Today, this hill offers spectacular views of a sea of clouds floating above the mountains, embodying Takachiho’s unique fusion of natural wonder and mythological allure.
