At Yamanaka-ko (Lake Yamanaka), the largest and closest of the Fuji Five Lakes to the mountain, visitors experience an intimate view of Mount Fuji’s grandeur. The proximity reveals spectacular sights: the red-tinged Fuji in early summer mornings and the crimson Fuji in winter. On calm days, the lake’s surface mirrors a perfect reflection of the mountain. Twice yearly, in mid-November and early February, visitors can witness the Diamond Fuji phenomenon (when the sun appears to rest directly on Mount Fuji’s peak, creating a dazzling diamond-like effect) as the setting sun crowns the peak. From the Yamanaka-ko Panorama-dai observation point, the vista unfolds into an overwhelming display of natural artistry, where ethereal landscapes emerge from the interplay of elements.
Getting there: About 20 minutes by car from Yamanakako IC on Higashi-Fujigoko Road. Parking available.
Note: Winter tires required during winter season.
Photographed: Late December 2023, 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM
Temperature: -3°C (26.6°F)
