On the southern tip of Shodoshima Island, in Konoura on the Mito Peninsula, rests the awe-inspiring “Daidara Ultra Bow” (by Toshimitsu Ito + Hiroshima City University).
This giant was created for the Setouchi Triennale 2022, this monumental work embodies “a giant who shaped Japan’s mountains and rivers, now pondering his next creation during a brief respite.” Crafted from local stone walls, abandoned ships, and driftwood, it exudes a timeless presence.
As the Daidara Ultra Bow gazes out over the Seto Inland Sea’s island-dotted expanse, the setting sun dips below the horizon. Amidst gently swaying grasses and whispering breezes, this silent sentinel seems to murmur ancient tales.
