Lake Inawashiro, Japan’s fourth-largest lake located in central Fukushima Prefecture, is dominated by the majestic Mt. Bandai to the north, offering stunning scenery throughout the seasons.
Winter brings a rare natural phenomenon called “spray ice” along the lakeshore. Strong winds whip up lake water, which freezes on tree branches, creating intricate ice sculptures. This spectacle, visible only from mid-January to late February during the coldest period, produces breathtaking formations with Mt. Bandai as a backdrop.
Getting there: About 20 minutes on foot from Tenjin Hama (Beach) parking lot (free). Proper winter attire is essential as some areas in the forest may be frozen.
Photographed: Late February 2021, 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM
Temperature: -5°C (23°F)
