Just a short drive from bustling Hakata, the coastal haven of Itoshima in Fukuoka has in recent years become one of Kyushu’s most sought-after destinations. With its ease of access and the rare opportunity to commune effortlessly with nature, it offers an irresistible allure. Along its rugged yet serene shoreline, stylish cafés and boutiques stand side by side with eateries serving local delicacies made from the freshest treasures of the sea. Together with the beauty of the ocean itself, the area unfolds into vistas of profound tranquility.
Among its many charms, none captures the heart quite like the sunset from Sakurai Futamigaura. Here, a pure white torii gate and the Meoto Iwa—two weathered rocks bound together by a sacred shimenawa rope—rise from the water, their forms illuminated by the sinking sun. The scene is both mystical and quietly romantic. As time passes, the sky and sea shift from a luminous crimson to a deep indigo, and after nightfall, the distant flicker of fishing lights at sea heightens the sense of enchantment.
This is a place where quiet, beautiful moments invite you to forget the everyday and surrender yourself to the stillness.
