The Breathtaking Scenery of Kujukushima, Woven by Light and Wind

This is Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture—home to the famed Kujukushima—literally “Ninety-Nine Islands,” though in truth there are 208—an island-dotted seascape created by the intricate rias coastline. True to its poetic name, which means “countless islands,” this is one of the most beautiful multi-island seascapes in Japan.
From Ishidake Observatory, the sunset view is truly breathtaking. The sea shimmers in golden light, and the silhouettes of the islands rise gently from the water—like a scene from a painting. It’s no wonder this landscape was chosen for the opening scene of the film The Last Samurai.
The views from other vantage points—such as Tenkaiho, Funakoshi Observatory, and Yumiharidake Observatory—are also spectacular. In daylight, the vivid blue sea contrasts strikingly with the lush greenery of the islands. Light and wind weave their way between the islands, carrying with them a sense of stillness and abundance. It is a view worthy of being called “Japan’s treasure chest.”
